'Environment Regulation and Enforcement' Workshop : 10 October, 2014 at IFAT India 2014

In cooperation with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), GIZ India is hosting a workshop on “Environment Regulation and Enforcement” at IFAT India 2014 Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Refuse and Recycling in Mumbai. Leading experts from Germany and India will share their experience with water and waste regulation, both from a public and a private sector point of view. Ways to further strengthen institutions for improved environmental regulation will be discussed with experienced regulators. The event will take place on Friday, October 10, 2014, from 14:00 hours to 18:00 hours at Hall 5, Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.

The growing focus on promoting economic growth in the country comes with an enormous challenge for effective environmental regulation. Increasing industrial activity, mining, infrastructural development, etc. demands not only need effective implementation and enforcement of existing environmental laws and legislations, but also innovative mechanisms and systems in place.

Environmental governance is influenced by, and has impacts on a vast variety of institutional stakeholders. Effective enforcement requires an informed consensus that can be achieved by clear understanding of the shared roles and responsibilities of all players, which includes regulators, regulated community (developers and polluters), and also the affected community (general public).

Over several decades, various committees and assessment reports have pointed out wide weaknesses and gaps in compliance, monitoring and inspection procedures, leading to poor implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, rules and regulations by regulatory agencies.

This workshop will shed light on best practice examples of effective environmental regulation, and provide a platform to find ways to strengthen institutions for improved environmental regulation.
