The agricultural and food processing industries have an extremely important role to play in the economic development of the Central Asian region, especially in the rural areas and urban peripheries. However, there is a lack of experts and managers who are adequately trained in the use of economically efficient, modern and ecologically sustainable technologies. The Central Asian education systems are unable to train such experts and managers to the required standard.

Objective

Modern and appropriate technologies are being used, the economic and ecological demands of the private sector are taken into consideration, and modern teaching and learning methods are applied. Experts and teaching staff benefit from greater employability.

Approach

The programme focuses on the broad-based development of competencies, resources and performance capacity (capacity development) at educational institutions, according to the institutional and human resources needs of the respective countries. It supports universities, teacher training institutes and vocational and technical colleges. This differentiated, vertical integration of different centres of vocational education ensures the interlinking at different levels of important training content for the processing of agricultural produce. In close cooperation with the partner institutions, the programme is developing a range of pilot degree courses and training programmes. It is introducing new approaches and methods for teachers to use, and developing new teaching materials better suited to modern management and labour needs. The programme is also exploiting existing technical expertise at the partner institutions in the region for the further development and modernisation of vocational education in the sector.
Important elements of support for the partner institutions include:

  • curriculum development
  • teaching programmes in agro and food processing
  • cooperation with the private sector
  • further education for vocational trainers
  • knowledge management
