Jordan:Refugees are learning to be plumbers
04.01.2017 – Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled to Jordan. A report from the magazine akzente describes how they are finding new prospects.
Jordan is one of the world’s most arid countries. In addition, much water is wasted due to pipes that leak or are installed unprofessionally. This problem has been exacerbated with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Syrians who fled to Jordan as a result of the civil war. A report from the magazine akzente illustrates how the water shortage can be alleviated and how refugees are learning a new profession.
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ),the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting the training of plumbers:Nearly 300 women and men – more than a third of them Syrian refugees – are receiving training. ‘I intend to work for myself,I want to be independent of a man’s income,’ says Fatima Ahmad Mubarak. She and the other participants have already almost reached this goal.
