Advisory services for career opportunities in Tunisia
Faced with a weak economy, high unemployment and inadequate vocational education and training, young people from the Maghreb are heading to Western Europe in search of a better future. Often they are unaware of the training and employment opportunities that are available to them in their home country. This is the idea behind the German-Tunisian Centre for Jobs, Migration and Reintegration, a partnership launched in March between the Tunisian National Employment Agency (ANETI), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the International Placement Services (ZAV) of the German Federal Employment Agency (BA). Oula Tarsim, the centre’s director, explains the work it does in Tunis.
Ms Tarsim, what is the centre’s target group?
The services we provide are available to all Tunisians. That includes, of course, people who have returned to Tunisia from countries overseas, including Germany. Most of the people we see come to us looking for work or vocational training. More specifically, we provide information in one-to-one interviews on employment and training opportunities in Tunisia – as well as on ways to migrate to Germany on a legal basis.
What services do you provide exactly?
We provide an overview of training positions that are vacant in Tunisia, for example, and we organise training sessions on job applications, information events at vocational schools and job fairs. In collaboration with the International Placement Services (ZAV) of the German Federal Employment Agency (BA), the centre also offers application rounds for positions in Germany. So far over 80 Tunisians have applied for IT jobs or positions in the hotel and catering sector.
You started activities two months ago. Is there demand for these advisory services?
Yes, our services have been very well received: we have advised more than 250 people since the centre opened in early March. The German-Tunisian Centre has already established itself as an important drop-in point here in Tunis. We open people’s eyes to new career opportunities, often options they knew nothing about. Our goal is to reach 2,000 people by the end of the year.
