2021 lecture series: Sustainable development needs peace; peace needs sustainable development

The overarching theme of this year’s annual lecture series is how to make the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development a reality and translate the SDGs into practice. Over five evenings, experts from the academic and research community, politics, civil society and development cooperation will be presenting their views.

The 2021 lecture series addresses one of the core concerns of the 2030 Agenda – peace. War and violent conflict, and the fallout from them, impact on the lives of around two billion people around the world and put the sustainable development of entire countries and regions at risk. Even when conflict is resolved, societies often continue to be affected by its consequences for decades.

The strong link between sustainable development and peace is set out in the Preamble to the 2030 Agenda. Peace is the focus of a specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 16) and also a cross-cutting theme of all the SDGs. Individual lectures will tackle the topic from a wide perspective, shedding light on such areas as reconciliation processes, food and nutrition security, the role of women, and digitalisation in peace processes.

The events are free of charge and open to the public (subject to registration). Each lecture will be streamed live from the GIZ Representation in Berlin between 18:00 and 19:30. Please note the lectures will be in German.
