Cinema offers unlimited ways of answering the questions ‘What does this have to do with me?’ and ‘What can I do?’, for example when it comes to the impact of climate change, migration, training, war, human rights violations or environmental destruction in partner countries, all issues at the heart of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development's (BMZ) work.

This is the third time that BMZ will award the Cinema Fairbindet prize at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) for a film that excels in promoting the current dialogue about particular aspects of the relationship between the Global North and the Global South thanks to its aesthetic, emotional or narrative strengths. The nominated feature films and documentaries come from all over the world and will appear at the Berlinale in one of these four sections: Competition, Forum, Panorama or Generation. The award, which includes prize money and a roadshow taking the film to some 25 selected cinemas in Germany, will be presented by Dirk Niebel, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development.
