Squandered and spoiled: the significance of food loss

Event in the series ‘Die Welt im Gespräch’ by GIZ and General-Anzeiger

One third of all food produced worldwide is lost or wasted along the value chain. And with it, everything invested in its production: water and land resources, money for inputs and energy, hours of labour. Minimising food loss and waste is one of the most important levers for tackling the climate crisis and improving the resilience of our food system. Industrialised nations are primarily faced with waste in the retail sector and through consumer behaviour. By contrast, most food loss in developing countries occurs before products even reach the shelves.

What do we have to change about the way in which we produce and consume food? What are good approaches in developing countries for reducing food loss in value chains? What do retailers and consumers in industrialised nations have to do in order to curb waste?

As part of the ‘Die Welt im Gespräch’ (‘The World in Conversation’) series, these questions will be debated on 7 December 2022, from 18:00 to 19:30, in a discussion featuring the following experts:

Isabel Naguib, Foodsharing Bonn

Dr Thomas Schmidt, Thünen Institute, Braunschweig

Dr Heike Ostermann, GIZ

Chair: Lutz Warkalla, former editor of the General-Anzeiger newspaper
