Major success in spite of all the difficulties: GIZ will continue to work in Afghanistan post 2014

Interview opportunity – Afghanistan

Kabul/Eschborn. The votes of the 14 June run-off elections in Afghanistan have been counted and the country now has a new president. However, more than 30 years of armed conflict have essentially wiped out people’s livelihoods, leaving Afghanistan one of the poorest countries in the world. Economic development, provision of clean drinking water and electricity along with a better level of education and reconstruction of the Afghan National Police force are just some of the challenges which the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is addressing in Afghanistan on behalf of the German Government. ‘Successfully,' says Peter Palesch, GIZ Country Director in Afghanistan. ‘For example, hundreds of thousands of Afghans today have access to electricity and many companies now offer jobs and new prospects for local citizens.’

This success has come about in spite of the difficult security situation in the country. On behalf of the German Government, GIZ has developed a security management concept that allows it to implement projects in various regions throughout Afghanistan. The pivotal element of this concept is the population’s acceptance of the measures being implemented. Thus today there is already no doubt that GIZ will continue to work in Afghanistan even after Germany’s armed forces have withdrawn. Many projects already have a completion date that extends beyond 2014.

GIZ Country Director in Afghanistan, Peter Palesch, is available to answer the media’s questions on GIZ’s work in Afghanistan between 10 am and 2 pm on 27 June. Please contact GIZ’s Press Office if you are interested in arranging an interview. Printable photographic materials on various projects will be provided free of Charge.
