GIZ supports new urban mobility initiative in developing countries and emerging economies

The new initiative „MobiliseYourCity“ for sustainable urban mobility was presented at the climate change conference in Morocco.

In the framework of the climate change conference in Morocco, today the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the French Ministry of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment (MEMEE) presented a joint initiative to foster more sustainable urban mobility in developing countries and emerging economies. On behalf of the BMUB, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is using the MobiliseYourCity initiative to help cities plan and implement a sustainable transport and corresponding infrastructure system. The focus will be on building and promoting low-emission transport systems and technologies as well as developing sensible investment programmes for cities and municipalities, strengthening the effectiveness of public institutions and in particular mainstreaming planning processes between ministries, the private sector and citizens.

Thus far cities in developing countries and emerging economies have been growing rapidly, with negative impacts and increasing air pollution, traffic and accidents. At the same time, the increase in emissions caused by transport is also having a long-term negative influence on the climate in Germany and Europe. The sustainable and low-carbon development of urban mobility in developing countries and emerging economies presents a global challenge that the joint European initiative addresses.

The initiative is being supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the French Centre for Environment, Mobility and Spatial Planning (CEREMA), the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADAME) and CODATU, an international non-governmental organisation involved in transport in developing countries.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federal enterprise with worldwide operations. We support the German Government in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. We are also engaged in international education activities around the globe. Through our work we assist people and societies in shaping their own future and improving living conditions.
