Great minds, great ideas – GIZ welcomes Ernesto Cardenal
Ernesto Cardenal, the Nicaraguan poet and priest, has been campaigning for a more equitable world for more than half a century. He is widely recognised as one of Nicaragua’s foremost poets and is a prominent proponent of liberation theology.
Cardenal was born in Nicaragua in 1925 into a wealthy family with Spanish origins. After first studying philosophy and literature, he completed a university degree in theology in the late 1950s. While still a student, he developed an interest in politics and became involved in revolutionary movements. He was ordained a priest in 1965. Following the successful revolution in Nicaragua led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front, Cardenal held the position of Minister of Culture from 1979 until 1987, advocating ‘revolution without revenge’. In 1980 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Today, he lives in Managua, where he continues to write.
The social disparities between poor and rich and the destruction of natural livelihoods are ever-present themes in his literary work.
In cooperation with the GIZ sector programme Values, Religion and Development, we invite you to attend this very special event with Ernesto Cardenal. The poet will be reading poetry from his oeuvre, a significant literary achievement that has influenced several generations.
Grupo Sal Trio will provide musical accompaniment, interspersing the poetry readings with contemporary Latin American songs.
Lutz Kliche, the poet’s translator and friend of many years, will read the texts in German translation and act as interpreter in conversation with Ernesto Cardenal.
The evening will close with an informal exchange of views and the opportunity to network over drinks and snacks.
We look forward to seeing you there!
