Spending a year in the USA after completing vocational training

Live, study and work in the USA –the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Programme offers young professionals the opportunity to spend a year immersed in American society and gain first-hand experience of the historical, social and economic realities that make up the USA. Sponsored by the German Bundestag and now in its 35th year, this exchange programme enables young people to improve their language skills and enhance their career prospects. The combination of college attendance with an internship makes it particularly attractive.

Members of the German Bundestag and US Congress act as mentors for the German and American participants during their stay. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is responsible for implementing the programme and handling liaison with the young professionals.

The scholarships are funded by the German Bundestag and US Congress and cover the costs of preparation and follow-up, college attendance, accommodation in host families as well as travel and insurance.

Trainees currently in vocational education and young professionals wishing to apply for the programme must have a date of birth later than 31 July 1993, have taken English as a school subject for several years and have completed their vocational training before August 2018, when participants will leave for the USA. The closing date for applications is 15 September 2017.
