Women Mobilize Women conference – strengthening the role of women in the transport sector
‘When men plan transport, they plan transport for men!’
The transformation towards a climate-friendly, sustainable and altogether better transport sector is a global challenge that requires global action – by and for men and women. However, only 22% of people currently working in the transport sector are women. Yet it is primarily women who face special challenges when using transport services.
As part of the 2018 International Transport Forum Summit, the BMZ Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) is organising the Women Mobilize Women conference at the KONGRESSHALLE am Zoo Leipzig on 22 May 2018. This is the first conference of its kind to place the spotlight on and boost the potential of women in the transport sector. The focus is on two key themes: increasing the employment of women in the transport sector and gender awareness in transport planning.
TUMI is launching an overdue debate on the relevance of advancing women in the field of ‘sustainable urban mobility’, and is specifically encouraging the international exchange of knowledge among senior international experts in transport.
Stimulating discussions on empowering women in the transport sector and presentations on women’s experiences, with a focus on developing and emerging countries, will be the basis for debates on how women can help to transform the transport sector. Top projects and initiatives will present their practical approaches to women's empowerment and gender-sensitive urban transport planning, and will take part in discussions with one another.
