Ukraine at the World’s Leading Travel Trade Show: ITB in Berlin

The German Government is supporting Ukraine with its preparations for the 2012 European Football Championship

Berlin, 9 March 2011. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting Ukraine this year with its presentation at the ITB in Berlin from 9 to 13 March 2011 on behalf of the German Government.

At the request of the Ukrainian Government, GIZ experts are providing advice on how to improve the quality and marketing of services for tourists both in the run-up to and during Euro 2012, the European Football Championship. Ukraine is expecting around 1.2 million visitors at the 16 different venues for the event. The German experts are also advising on the management and operations of Ukraine's four new airport terminals and on improving local public transport. The consulting services focus on the venues Lviv, Kiev, Kharkiv and Donetsk. In addition, the image of Europe's second-largest country in terms of area is to be improved, new investors attracted to the country, and new impetus given to the economy. Sustainable economic development is one of the priority areas of Ukrainian-German development cooperation, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Ukrainian presence at the ITB is one of the building blocks within the overall Euro 2012 programme, through which the German Government is helping Ukraine to successfully prepare for the Championship in the interests of the country as a whole. At the World Cup in South Africa, GIZ used German know-how to contribute to the success of the event. 'Ukraine has great unexploited potential for tourism, potential that offers both visitors and investors a diversity of opportunities,' says Project Manager Mathias Brandt. At the same time GIZ is supporting Ukraine at the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin in an effort to attract investors interested in increasing the quantity and quality of accommodation.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federal enterprise with worldwide operations. It supports the German Government in international cooperation for sustainable development and in international education work. GIZ supports people and societies in shaping their own futures and improving living conditions.
