Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL)

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) commissions GIZ to implement projects on a case-by-case basis.

GIZ undertakes international projects on behalf of the Ministry. Examples include a sustainable agriculture project in Ethiopia and the German-Sino Agricultural Center in China. GIZ is also involved in global projects – promoting the use of sustainably produced palm oil in Germany, for example – in which it works closely with private-sector companies and non-governmental organisations.

GIZ supports BMEL in implementing projects on global food security within the framework of the German Government’s Bilateral Trust Fund with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. GIZ is also working on behalf of the Ministry in the areas of international forest policy and sustainable forest management in China.

At the technical level, BMEL and GIZ regularly engage in dialogue on global food security, sustainable resource management and agricultural research. They also cooperate closely on arranging and hosting the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), an international conference which takes place during International Green Week in Berlin.
