GIZ in North Rhine-Westphalia

International cooperation with North Rhine-Westphalia

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is one of Europe’s leading regions for research, industry and innovation, and is among Germany’s most important energy hubs. For many years, GIZ has been building bridges from this metropolitan region in the west of Germany throughout the world.

Our partners abroad benefit from North Rhine-Westphalia’s know-how in areas including energy, structural change and climate change mitigation. In the region, we support German companies and organisations in developing and implementing international cooperation arrangements and projects.

Our aim is to bring together actors from the worlds of policy-making, academia, the private sector and civil society to share potential across national borders – for sustainable development, for our clients and commissioning parties, and for a cosmopolitan and future-facing North Rhine-Westphalia.

Local action. A global presence.

GIZ works in more than 130 countries around the world and is represented in virtually every federal state within Germany. For many years, our commissioning parties and partners in NRW have included the state government, municipal institutions, civil society organisations and universities.

We also cooperate closely with private sector businesses, chambers of trade and industry, and business associations. Many international experts and managers, especially those from Africa, Asia and Latin America, have completed placements with NRW companies as part of their technical and management training. As a result, a wide range of long-term contacts and business relationships have formed between the German private sector and companies abroad.

Our services for you

With many years of experience, and partners throughout the world, we can support you in successfully implementing your projects. Our expertise is as wide-ranging as the needs of our commissioning parties, spanning everything from vocational education and training and the integration of experts to the environment, energy, urban development, and sustainable development and trade.

Developing international networks. Whether you work in policy-making, business or research, we can put you in touch with our partners around the world and forge sustainable alliances to tackle global challenges.

Access to new markets. Entering foreign markets can be risky, but we will open doors and support you with our contacts and experience as well as with advice packages, for topics such as the sustainable management of supply chains.

Project development and project management. We are experts in complex cross-border projects with various partners. We are a one-stop shop for everything from planning to implementation and long-term results monitoring.

Tapping into new funding opportunities. We can work with you to develop projects that will attract third-party funding, for example from the European Union. We can also draw on our expertise and experience with a host of international actors.

Tailor-made training in NRW. We offer international experts practice-oriented training for tomorrow’s challenges. You benefit from NRW’s experience and strengths through our cooperation arrangements with tried and tested local training partners.

Access to innovation and international know-how. Innovation requires knowledge. Our formats, both proven and innovative, will enable you to share experience and knowledge across borders, ranging from workshops to delegation visits and international conferences.

Selected programmes and projects

Germany as a market for continuing training: Becas Chile

On behalf of the Chilean Ministry of Education, we are implementing the Becas Chile programme, which aims to boost business competitiveness and vocational training in the country. Chilean experts spend a year developing their skills in German training institutions and companies as part of Germany’s dual vocational education and training system. The scheme focuses on Chile’s future-oriented sectors – mining, renewable energies, information technology and tourism. Meanwhile, the German partner companies make valuable contacts in Chile.

Sustainable economic cooperation: Afrika kommt!

On behalf of leading German businesses, we are currently coordinating the fourth cohort of participants in the Afrika kommt! (Africa is coming!) initiative, a training programme for young managers. These companies offer the next generation of managers from African countries an insight into their working processes and management methods. The scheme also opens up links with Africa’s emerging markets. Many of the young managers who take part in the prgramme have opportunities to continue to cooperate with the German partner companies once they return home.

Climate change mitigation and resource conservation in Ghana

We are supporting NRW in implementing its One World strategy. In the partner country of Ghana, for example, we are advising the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, in developing a competence centre for climate change mitigation and resource conservation. The priority areas for expert cooperation with NRW universities include renewable energy, energy efficiency, resources, and waste management. We also support the organisation of North Rhine-Westphalia’s presence at West Africa’s most important energy and environment fair, WACEE.

Promoting foreign trade: NRW and China

Since the 1980s, we have been bringing companies from NRW and China together on behalf of the federal state government of NRW and Chinese provincial governments. Management training courses and company placements lasting several months offer Chinese experts and managers an opportunity for reliable and successful cooperation. The exchange scheme is supported, for example, by study trips for experts and visits by delegations of high-ranking decision-makers from the two countries. Our alumni and partner networks enable participants to remain in touch in the long term.
