Indo-German Biodiversity Programme celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity, 2015

Indo-German Biodiversity Programme has lined up a range of events across different states in India, to commemorate International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22). These events will be held in Delhi with the Department of Environment & Forests, in Maharashtra with the Maharashtra Forest Department, and as a part of Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI) in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.

Delhi (Friday, 22 May 2015, 8:00-13:00 hrs): Nature walk with students of Eco-clubs, Asola-Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary

A half-day event with school and college students at the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary, located along the northern terminal of Aravalli Hills, one of the oldest mountain system of the world. On 22nd May, over hundred students from various schools and colleges and teachers will participate in the nature walk, followed by an interactive session. Also planned is a street play by the students along with other cultural activity on ‘nature and biodiversity’. GIZ will also screen films made by students of Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai by GIZ’s partner, on training modules on coastal and marine biodiversity. A poster and essay writing competition has been announced for all Delhi schools.

Maharashtra : The Mangrove Cell, Maharashtra Forest Department has organised events at the project sites in Maharashtra, involving school students and the village community.

Velas- Dabhol : At Velas, a bird watching session has been planned for the students of near-by villages. As a part of the nature trail, the students will prepare name tags for all the species along the mangrove trail and along the beach. The nature walk will be followed by a film screening and discussion on the issue the theme’ Biodiversity for Sustainable Development’.

Ansure Creek: As part of the education awareness campaign on conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, the Mangrove Cell, Mumbai organised a drawing competition on the topic, ‘My Village and Mother Nature’s Bounty’ for the school children at Ansure village. The students also attended a dialogue on the mangrove ecosystem, the flagship species in the area, sustainable use of biodiversity and its importance for Ansure. The winners of the competition will be awarded on the 22nd May.

Srinagar (Friday, 22 May 2015, 9:00-13:00 hrs) : Launch of publication ‘Bridging Business and Biodiversity: Innovative Approaches’: Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Chashma Shahi, Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir.

India Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IBBI) is organising a session on Business and Biodiversity as part of the programme by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change. The session will focus on initiatives of IBBI member companies that have positively contributed to conservation of biodiversity and improved the bottom line of the business.

A publication 'Bridging Business and Biodiversity: Innovative Approaches' will be released during the event. The report showcases achievements of 6 IBBI member companies that have undertaken assessment of impacts and dependencies on biodiversity across entire value chain and developed strategies in biodiversity management.
