Girls in Goražde eliminate prejudices

10 female students and 9 male students enrolled into a secondary school programme for plastic processing operators at the Secondary Vocational School ''Džemal Bijedić''

The Secondary Vocational School ''Džemal Bijedić'' Goražde has a new generation of students who will attend the education programme for plastic processing operators. The class consists of 19 students, which is considerably more than last year, when there were 15 students. Although our society is riddled with the prejudice that certain vocational professions are intended only for boys, the 10 girls who enrolled into this education programme have fully confuted such a claim, at least in this town on Drina river.

One of the girls that fell in love with this education programme is Medina Adilović, who heard about the school and the programme in the media: ''It immediately woke my interest and I decided to enroll. I heard that many students from the previous generation found a job after they had graduated. That was one of the most important reasons for me.'' She did not even take other schools into consideration, as this was her first choice.

She was supported by her parents and friends in all of this. ''My parents agreed with it from the beginning. My friends, although they did not know what a plastic processing operator does, fully supported my decision'', she says and adds that she did not hear comments that it was an education programme exclusively for boys.

She is planning to stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future and to improve in the job for which she is studying.  ''I would recommend all girls to get information about the school and then decide whether the occupation is something they might do. It is extremely important for them to know that this is a programme that provides a perspective for our town and country'', she says.

The principal of the Secondary Vocational School ''Džemal Bijedić'', Sedin Hadžimusić, says that the school is extremely satisfied with the enrollment rates in 2020/2021. ''As regards the profession of plastic processing operator, we will have an interesting class in which teaching will take place in compliance with the dual organized education system. We hope that practical training will continue to take place at companies in our canton. GIZ helped us a lot with the implementation of practical training by supporting the school through providing equipment, a state-of-art plastic injection moulding machine. The school has a professional, young and well-trained teaching staff that is able to work with state-of-art technologies, so that students attending this programme will have one of the best state-of-art workshops'', says Hadžimusić.

"PREVENT COMPONENTS" d.o.o. Goražde and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) are cooperating in a development partnership under the programme commisioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). They are jointly implementing the project ''IDEAL – Improving and Developing the Educational System for Plastic Processing Operators in Bosnia and Herzegovina''. The development of occupational standards for the occupation plastic processing operator has been supported in the framework of the project. The curriculum for the occupation plastic processing operator, which is the most sophisticated in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been implemented since 2019/2020. It was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Youth, Science, Culture and Sport of Bosnia-Podrinje Canton Goražde. The Secondary Vocational School ''Džemal Bijedić'' Goražde is the only school in Bosnia and Herzegovina that offers an educational programme for this occupation.
