Strengthening German global health policy

Project description

Title: Support in German global health policy 2.0
Commissioned by: Federal Ministry of Health (BMG)
Financier: BMG
Country: Germany
Overall term: 2020 to 2022

Context

Sustainable Development Goal 3 of the United Nations – Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all – can only be achieved by taking action at a global level. In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is playing the leading role in shaping global health policy.

The German Government’s new strategy (2020) aims to align the German health engagement with the current challenges of global health, to contribute German expertise and experience at international level, and to ensure long-term effectiveness. Germany will take over the G7 Presidency in 2022 and would like to use this opportunity to advance German priorities in the area of global health.

Objective

The effectiveness and visibility of the German global health engagement have increased and Germany’s pioneering role in this regard has been expanded.

Approach

The project supports BMG in three areas:

  1. It raises awareness of and disseminates the German Government’s Global Health Strategy,  allowing priority areas to be discussed at national and international level. The project also supports BMG in coordinating and monitoring the implementation of the strategy.
  2. Germany seeks to expand the key position it occupies in global health. At the same time, it aims to incorporate the core components of the German strategy into international policy processes and to present them to different bodies, such as the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Health Assembly, the United Nations, the G7 and G20 member countries, and the EU. During its G7 Presidency, Germany will also ensure that the priorities of German global health policy become focal issues. The project supports BMG in implementing the German G7 programme in the health sector.
  3. The project promotes national and international dialogue on the core issues of global health. The focus here is on a knowledge exchange between experts and actors and on regular dialogue with non-governmental stakeholders.
