Maternal and Child Health

Globally, fewer women are dying in pregnancy and childbirth. The mortality rate of children under the age of 5 has nearly halved and more children are going to school – and also completing it – not least because fewer adolescent girls are becoming mothers. But while skilled birth attendance increased by 19 per cent worldwide, there has hardly been any improvement in sub-Saharan Africa. And while the number of deaths per 100,000 unsafe abortions declined overall from 50 to 30, the number is still up to 15 times higher in Africa than this global average.
