Droughts, floods, storms, heat waves: climate change is already making itself felt throughout the world. Developing countries are hardest hit, but they bear the least responsibility for the adverse effects.

International climate policy, grounded in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), recognises this discrepancy. Within the UNFCCC process, the international community now faces the challenge of negotiating a post-2020 agreement. The parties to the Convention, which include Germany, have set the goal of limiting global warming to 2 °C relative to the pre-industrial level. This calls for major efforts worldwide to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain carbon sinks. Yet even if the 2 °C target is met, climate change will have inescapable effects. Adapting to change is therefore vital to achieving sustainable development.

In both areas – mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptation to climate change – developing and emerging countries depend on financial support from industrialised nations. The latter have committed under the Convention to making financial resources available and to establishing the Green Climate Fund.

Through its diverse climate-related activities, GIZ on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) makes key contributions to sustainable development in partner countries. We advise governments and support projects in the areas of greenhouse gas emission reduction, carbon sink conservation, climate change adaptation and climate finance.

Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions

Germany supports international endeavours to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), GIZ advises and supports partner countries in developing and implementing strategies and action to reduce greenhouse gases.
