Towards Health for All

Health is a human right and an essential prerequisite for social, economic and political development, stability and peace. Globally health has improved considerably over the past 25 years, but progress has not been even.

The quest for healthy lives for all is taking place against a complex and shifting backdrop. Health is in transition in our increasingly globalised, interconnected and mobile world. New challenges are emerging, while old ones remain prominent. Tackling these challenges and their consequences for health comes at a price and pushes already stressed health systems to their limits. Addressing health issues requires innovative approaches, particularly in the area of prevention, and close collaboration with other sectors, such as agriculture, business, climate, education, governance, tourism, trade and water.

Germany promotes a multilateral, globally-oriented and human rights-based health policy. Social security, solidarity, universal access to quality health services and strong civil society engagement are being realised in today’s Germany; this can serve as an example for partner countries.

Health is a core capacity of GIZ. Drawing upon decades of first-hand experience in the field of health, GIZ is presently cooperating with nearly 80 countries on health-related matters on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and other national and international clients and partners.

GIZ employs approaches aimed at all levels of health systems and of societies, from national and international agenda setting and policy advice in partner countries, to targeted interventions, such as improved access to services and promoting community involvement in addressing local health challenges. Throughout, it places emphasis on capacity development, quality and sustainability. Approaches are sector-wide, systemic, cross-cutting and often transnational.
