The EU-funded action "Strengthening Management of Chemical Waste in Eastern and Central African Region - P111", contributes to the EU’s strategic goals of promoting peace, environmental protection, and regional security. The project seeks to reduce risks and threats associated with improperly managed chemical waste across Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) region - where growing industrialisation and weak institutional capacity heighten exposure to hazardous substances.
The initiative addresses common challenges faced by partner countries, despite their economic and institutional diversity: weak enforcement systems, limited infrastructure for safe disposal, insufficient technical capacity, and underdeveloped cross-border coordination. These challenges increase vulnerability to chemical incidents and impede integration of chemical waste management into broader CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) risk strategies.
The project’s intervention logic is structured around three core operational priorities,
with a strong focus on cross-border collaboration and institutional capacity building:
1. Developing common practices for chemical waste management;
2. Strengthening the ability of monitoring institutions to detect and act on suspicious shipments;
3. Fostering a dynamic of regional coordination through training and experience sharing.
