Ausgangssituation
Geringe Produktivität und geringe Wettbewerbsfähigkeit kennzeichnen die Wirtschaft der Ostafrikanischen Gemeinschaft (East African Community, EAC) und führen zu hoher Arbeitslosigkeit, besonders unter jungen Menschen. Innovation und der Einsatz von Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) in Unternehmen sind Triebkräfte sozioökonomischer Entwicklung und internationaler Wettbewerbsfähigkeit. Um das Potenzial der IKT für die Wirtschaft und die Gesellschaft der EAC zu erschließen, werden digitale Kompetenzen und Fachkräfte mit entsprechenden Qualifikationen und Innovationsfähigkeiten gebraucht. Aber die Angebote der Universitäten sind nicht auf die Bedarfe der Privatwirtschaft und junger Innovator*innen abgestimmt.

Ziel
Die digitalen Kompetenzen von jungen Menschen in allen EAC-Partnerländern sind in Bezug auf Beschäftigungs- und Innovationsfähigkeit gestärkt.

Vorgehensweise

Das Vorhaben ist darauf ausgerichtet,

- Qualität des praxisorientierten Masterstudiengangs und der studienbezogenen Angebote für junge Fachkräfte in der EAC am Exzellenzzentrum für Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien in Ostafrika durch nachhaltige Zusammenarbeit mit der Industrie zu verbessern;
- nachfrageorientierte Trainings zur Vermittlung digitaler Kompetenzen für den privaten und öffentlichen Sektor einzurichten, die dem Bedarf der Industrie Rechnung tragen;
- unternehmerische Initiative und Innovationstransfer zur Unterstützung der Entwicklung digitaler Lösungen an Universitäten über ein Kooperationsnetz von Innovationszentren und das Exzellenzzentrum für IKT in Ostafrika zu fördern.
 

Context

The economy of the East African Community (EAC) is characterised by low productivity and low competitiveness, leading to high unemployment, especially among youth. Innovation and the application of information and communication technologies (ICT) by businesses are drivers of socio-economic development and international competitiveness. To unlock the potential of ICT for the economy and society of the EAC, the availability of digital skills and skilled workers with appropriate qualifications and innovation capacities is crucial. However, the universities do not serve the needs of the private sector and young innovators.

Objective

Employment and innovation related digital skills of young people in all East African Community Partner States are strengthened.

Approach

The project aims to:

- improve the quality of the practice-oriented Master’s programme and study-related offerings for young professionals in the EAC at the Centre of Excellence for ICT in East Africa through sustainable collaboration with the industry.
- Setup successful demand-driven short courses and trainings in digital skills for the private and public sector that meet the needs of the industry.
- Pomote entrepreneurship activities and an innovation transfer to support the development of digital solutions at universities through a cooperation network of innovation hubs and the Centre of Excellence for ICT in East Africa.
