Paving the Way for Green Energy: Eskom Study on Energy Attribute Certificates now available!

Eskom’s study on “Use Cases and Regulatory Requirements for the Implementation of an Energy Attribute Certification System for Renewables and Green Hydrogen in South Africa" is now available!

The central objective of this study was to furnish all stakeholders within the electricity industry in South Africa with the insights required to understand the pressing necessity for an adaptable, transparent, and comprehensive energy attribute certification (EAC) scheme.

But what exactly are EACs, and why are they crucial for the future of South Africa's energy landscape? EACs are market-based mechanisms designed to track and trade the green attributes of energy (i.e. electricity, hydrogen, biogas), notably its renewable content. EACs offer a multitude of benefits:

  • Promoting Renewable Energy Development: EACs make renewable energy more attractive to investors by providing an additional source of revenue. This incentive encourages the growth of renewable energy infrastructure and the transition away from fossil fuels.
  • Enhancing Transparency and Accountability: EACs improve transparency and accountability in the power sector. By providing a standardized method to track the green attributes of energy, consumers and stakeholders can make informed decisions and hold energy providers accountable for their claims.
