Interview opportunity – tourist destination Myanmar

Myanmar is continually widening its range of services for tourists

Eschborn/Yangon. Things are changing in Myanmar. For about two years now this country in South-East Asia has been experiencing greater political transparency, a development that has also had an impact on the tourism sector. Since 2010, the number of visitors to Myanmar has more than doubled: in 2010 tourists numbered around 800,000, whereas last year Myanmar welcomed two million visitors.

‘Myanmar is continually extending its range of services for tourists,’ says Nicole Häusler who works for the Myanmar Tourism Federation in Yangon. Häusler was seconded by the Centre for International Migration and Development (CIM), the operation run jointly by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the German Federal Employment Agency (BA). ‘New hotels are being built here and we advise them, amongst other things, on sustainability issues,’ says Häusler. Myanmar is one of the world’s poorest countries and tourism is a vital source of income.

Through her job, Nicole Häusler has got to know the country exceptionally well and says that Myanmar has something for everyone – from ancient Buddhist monasteries to solitary beaches and majestic Himalayan landscapes. Ms Häusler will be on hand from 10 am to 1 pm on Friday, 8 August 2014 to answer your questions on Myanmar’s must-see locations and what CIM has done to promote tourism there. Please contact GIZ’s Press Office if you would like to arrange an interview with Ms Häusler.
