International Women’s Day: Female Pioneers for future generations

Societies cannot be stable without gender equality and inclusion. Stories from successful women.

Equal opportunity as a successful model, not as a trend: the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been engaged in feminist development cooperation for many years. After all, development is sustainable only where the rights of girls, women and vulnerable groups are respected.

Two reading tips related to International Women’s Day 2024 highlight the messages that successful women can share with the younger generation and show us how equal opportunity and inclusion can bring about lasting and positive social change.

Inspiring future generations of women

For the first time, all regional human rights courts are currently headed by three women. Judges Imani Daud Aboud from Africa, Nancy Hernández López from the Americas and Síofra O’Leary from Europe are paving the way for women – not only in the judiciary. In an interview with akzente, they talk about being role models and about working together across continents. You can read the full interview here.

Behind the scenes of feminist foreign policy

Since 2023, feminist foreign policy has been a central focus of the German Government. Gesa Bräutigam, Special Envoy in the German Federal Foreign Office, believes that ‘gender equality makes countries and societies more peaceful, stable and economically successful.’ What exactly this means in practice and how the ministries and GIZ work together to address these issues is described in her guest article in akzente. You can read the article here.
