Context

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 – Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages – can only be achieved through global action. In Germany, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) is taking a leading role in shaping global health policy.

The aim of the German Government’s global health strategy (2020) is to set the direction for Germany’s commitment to current challenges, contribute German expertise internationally and ensure long-term effectiveness. Germany wants to make a visible contribution within international bodies and processes such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and in the G7 and G20.

Objective

The effectiveness and visibility of German global health engagement have increased and Germany’s leading role in this area has been expanded.

Approach

The project supports BMG in three areas:

  1. It raises awareness of the German Government’s global health strategy at national and international level and disseminates it. The project also supports BMG in coordinating and monitoring implementation of the strategy.

  2. Germany aims to expand its key role in global health. At the same time, core aspects of the German strategy are to be included and considered in international policy processes and bodies such as the Executive Board and World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO), the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board, along with the United Nations, the G7 and G20 member countries and the EU. The project supported BMG in 2022 in implementing the German G7 agenda in the health sector, with the aim of making the priorities of German global health policy a key focus of Germany's G7 Presidency.

  3. The project promotes national and international dialogue on the core areas of global health. The focus is on exchanging knowledge among experts and actors, and regular dialogue with non-state actors.
