The 3rd Viet Nam Urban Planning Award

The Technical Guideline for Bicycle Infrastructure Design in Urban Area, which was launched by the Administration of Technical Infrastructure (ATI) under the Ministry of Construction (MOC), GIZ, and its partners on 29 May 2023, was awarded a Bronze Prize for the category of “Planning Publications” of the 3rd Viet Nam Urban Planning Awar[HDGV1] d. This is co-organised by the Viet Nam Urban Planning and Development Association (VUPDA), the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment, and the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The award ceremony was held at Hanoi Opera House on 21 July 2023.

“The award underlines the relevance of the guidelines for transport planning in Viet Nam’s cities. We are convinced they will be instrumental for the development of safer and more livable cities, to promote cycling and contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions. It is also a reflection of the excellent inter-agency cooperation in the development process”, shared Mr. Daniel Herrmann, the Chief Technical Advisor of the Project “Support to Viet Nam for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement, Phase II” (VN-SIPA II).

The development of the Technical Guideline for Cycling Infrastructure Design in Urban Area was led by the Administration of Technical Infrastructure (ATI), Ministry of Construction (MOC) with technical support from GIZ, WRI, and HealthBridge.  This guideline comprises wide-ranging recommendations for designing bicycle infrastructure, highlighting five key areas of action such as: (i) Bicycle infrastructure design, (ii) Bicycle intersection design, (iii) Design for minimising traffic conflict, (iv) Traffic signals, pavement markings, and traffic signs, and (v) Supporting facilities.

The development, design, and printing of the Technical Guideline for Bicycle Infrastructure Design in Urban Areas are supported by Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and under the framework of the DeveloPPP project “Promote and Pilot a Public Bike-Sharing (PBS) Scheme in Viet Nam towards Sustainable Urban Mobility and Smart Cities”, the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) Project, and the HealthBridge Livable Cities Programme.
