Context

The greatest challenge facing Tunisia is unemployment. The unemployment rate in the country’s rural south is more than twice as high as in the north-east. The age group of 15-to-24-year-olds is disproportionately affected. What is more, those completing vocational training lack practical skills relevant to the labour market.

Objective

The Tunisian vocational training system increases the involvement of the private sector and improves the quality of training.

Approach

Together with the private sector, the project develops technical training curricula in the fields of textiles, plastics processing and tourism, aligned with industry needs.

It also trains the responsible public-sector employees within the Tunisian vocational training system, drawing upon the foundations and experience laid down in previous project phases.

Tunisian companies that need qualified employees are key intermediaries for the project. The project aims to motivate these companies to take on a more active role in vocational education and communicate their needs more clearly. For the companies, this is an opportunity to find enough suitable workers. It also increases the likelihood that they will give trainees permanent jobs after training.

In addition, the project provides long-term support for public-sector vocational training in cooperation with private-sector companies, via in-service training courses to develop the skills of public-sector employees.
