Commissioned byGerman Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)
CountryMexico
Lead executing agency: Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), Secretariat for Planning and Programming of the Presidency (SEGEPLAN)
Overall term: 2020 to 2023

Context

The political, economic and social situation in Guatemala is difficult, especially in rural areas. For this reason, many young people want to emigrate from Guatemala to find better opportunities elsewhere. As a result, people drop out of school and young people and adult migrants then return after unsuccessful immigration.

To counteract this, the quality of the Guatemalan education system needs to be improved, especially the technical and vocational education and training. Needs-based education opportunities for young people and adults with intermediate to secondary schooling are also required.

Objective

The needs-based education and job integration for young people, adults and Guatemalan migrants are improved.

Approach

To achieve this goal, the project is developing quality educational material – in digital and print form. At the same time, technical and vocational training is being introduced for secondary school teachers and supervisors, in cooperation with private enterprise. The triangular cooperation project is furthermore developing an education strategy to support returning migrants in Guatemala – based on experiences in Mexico. Lastly, by means of experience-sharing, workshops and training courses, Guatemala and Mexico are developing innovative solutions to improve the educational opportunities available to young people, adults and returning migrants.

In addition to these measures, the governments of Mexico and Germany are making mechanisms and technical advisory tools available to the project partners in Guatemala, aimed at strengthening the Guatemalan education system to make it easier for the beneficiaries to enter the labour market or set up their own business.
