PtX Hub: Promoting climate-neutral fuels and chemicals

Project description

TitlePower-to-X dialogue: resource needs, allocation and financing issues, and sustainability requirements in partner countries
Commissioned byFederal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU)
Country: Germany
Overall term: 2021 to 2024

Context

To keep global warming below 1.5°C, it is crucial to shift away from an economy dependent on fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil.

New technologies are needed to complement strategies of preventing, shifting and reducing climate-damaging emissions. Power-to-X (PtX) is one such innovation. It involves producing carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals using renewable electricity. This will enable economic sectors such as the aviation, shipping, chemicals, steel, fertiliser and cement industries to operate without fossil fuels in the future.

Many partner countries of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH already have the potential to develop sustainable hydrogen and PtX value chains. This will enable them to lower emissions, reduce their dependency on the importation of fossil fuels, and offer high-value export products.

The PtX Hub plays a crucial role in driving the production and application of green hydrogen and Power-to-X in partner countries by providing a platform for international knowledge exchange.

Objective

Thanks to sustainably produced PtX products, the PtX Hub contributes to a global shift away from fossil fuels in emission-intensive economic sectors.

Approach

The PtX Hub develops sustainability recommendations that serve as guidelines for the production of sustainable PtX products and ensure reliable investment conditions. In addition, the PtX Hub prepares projects by providing technical expertise and support for acquiring investments. At the same time, it advises political decision-makers on developing regulations for the dissemination of sustainable PtX production for local, regional and international markets. The PtX Hub facilitates knowledge sharing through dialogue and networking platforms, publishes knowledge products, organises training courses and workshops, and identifies tools to drive market development.
