Context

Peru is one of the ten most biodiverse countries in the world. More than half of the country’s surface area is covered by the Amazon rainforest. Peru’s economic model is largely based on using natural resources. However, this is often not climate-friendly and environmentally sound, nor is it designed for the long term. The Amazon rainforest is particularly affected. As an ecosystem, it is crucial for the preservation of biodiversity and fight against the climate crisis.

In recent years, Peru has made significant progress by improving legal framework conditions and establishing institutions for environmental and climate protection. Nevertheless, the capacities of the responsible authorities and the coordination between stakeholders are not yet sufficiently developed to effectively implement environmental, forest and climate policy.

Objective

The protection of biodiversity and tropical forests has improved, natural resources are used in a more environmentally sound and climate-friendly way.

Approach

The project supports the management of nature reserves according to international standards with the aim of preserving biodiversity in protected areas and buffer zones. In order to achieve this, it fosters environmentally friendly products and sustainable tourism, which will improve the living conditions of the local population and boost acceptance for nature conservation.

In addition, the project helps to promote wood products from sustainable forest management along the entire production chain. Digital methods ensure that the products are legally compliant.

At the same time, the project helps to develop stricter environmental criteria for investment projects and to implement more effective environmental management.

The project cooperates with the Ministry of Environment (MINAM), Ministry of Agriculture (MIDAGRI), the National Service for Protected Areas (SERNANP), the National Service of Environmental Certification for Sustainable Investments (SENACE), the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA), the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (SERFOR) and the Agency for the Supervision of Forest Resources and Wildlife (OSINFOR). The project is being implemented with the support of GITEC-IGIP Consult GmbH.
