Context

Uganda is rich with biomass, water, solar, geothermal and wind energy resources. However, due to inefficient use, much of this potential is wasted. This leaves many people without access to electricity and clean energy for cooking, especially in the northern region, which hinders local economic development through productive use of energy and slows down employment in the rural and peri-urban areas. Many social institutions also lack reliable energy to provide quality health care and education to local communities.

Objective

The programme supports the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in implementing strategies that increase access to renewable energy and energy efficient technologies.

Approach

The Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP) achieves its goals through:

  • Energy Policy Advice: providing advice on policies and strategies to integrate renewable energy into the sector and beyond as well as assistance during the implementation.
  • Energy Mainstreaming: supporting 22 District Local Governments by mainstreaming energy into all district departments, their workplans and budgets and fostering participatory planning with civil society.
  • Market Development: promoting access to and uptake of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies in households, social institutions and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Skills Development: supporting curriculum development and improvement of the educational framework for jobs in the renewable-energy sector through trainings and certification for trainers and technicians in collaboration with relevant national bodies and partner vocational training institutes.
