BMUV Policy Officer Nina Alsen visits Southern Leyte to experience ecosystem-based adaptation measures

In June, Policy Officer Nina Alsen (5th from left in photo) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) sub-division for Climate Adaptation and Prevention visited Southern Leyte in the Philippines to gather first-hand experience on the implementation of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures in the region. She was keen on getting a personal impression of the realities on the ground for a better understanding of the challenges that need to be overcome in the context of climate adaptation in the Philippines. She also spoke with stakeholders of the IKI-Project “Strengthening Disaster Resilience and Risk Mitigation through Ecosystem-based Planning and Adaptation (E4DR),” to learn about current efforts of local organisations to increase food security and coastal protection in the province. The E4DR implements pilot EbA measures in the region under the explicit consideration of biodiversity aspects, to mitigate disaster risks and to link biodiversity with climate and development policies to ensure synergies and mutual benefits.
