Context

Energy plays a key role in climate action and efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, which is why a swift energy transition is needed. As the demand for energy continues to rise, the uptake of renewable energies must be accelerated rapidly. A great deal has been achieved in this area, also due to the efforts of German development cooperation, for example: Renewable energies reached a new record in 2022 and account for 30 per cent of global electricity production. However, projections show that global investment in clean energy will have to nearly triple by 2030 to put the energy sector on a more climate-friendly course.

Objective

Partner countries create the necessary political and regulatory conditions for establishing modern and carbon-neutral energy systems. This gives more people access to clean and reliable energy.

Approach

The project supports the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in advancing the global energy transition. It provides advice on a wide range of energy-related topics and evolving technologies like green hydrogen. It supports active knowledge management and assists in the organisation of specific events.

The project supports BMZ’s cooperation with international partners – such as United Nations organisations and the European Commission. It builds on previous projects that, for example, were involved in the preparation of the first international conference for renewable energies in Bonn in 2004.

The programme also advises BMZ on improving conditions for investment to support and accelerate the preparation and implementation of infrastructure projects.
