Context
Yemen presently encounters difficulties in delivering quality healthcare services, signalling a need for improvement in its medical facilities. To this end, the Health System Strengthening Project aims to maintain essential healthcare services at an acceptable standard for the entire population across five governorates. The third project phase from August 2022 to December 2025 targets essential healthcare services in the governorates and also aims to improve referrals from the primary health care level to the relevant referral hospital.
Objective
The population is increasingly benefiting from quality-controlled services provided at health facilities.
Approach
The project builds on the results achieved in the second phase by adopting the Quality Improvement Program (QIP), which is designed to ensure the provision of improved care by health workers and facilities. For this, it builds up the capabilities of hospitals, improves the performance of health care providers and provides essential medical equipment and materials. It also carries out planning and cooperation activities with governorate health offices (GHO) and supervises district health offices and facilities. The project work includes assisting health managers in improving both health planning and services.
To take advantage of the German expertise, the Akkon University of Human Sciences with its Institute for Research in International Assistance (IRIA) plays a leading role in improving the capabilities of the national academic institutions to ensure long-term success of quality and performance improvement.
The project sustains the continuity of quality improvement of health care services by encouraging the quality team to develop quality circles on a regular basis to identify gaps, analyse daily challenges and follow up on key performance indicators.
