Context

The German Federal Police is actively involved in supporting the Jordanian security authorities as part of the German Government’s Enable and Enhance Initiative and its programme to train and equip foreign police authorities (AAH-P).

In this context and due to the precarious security situation in the Middle East, the Federal Police is assisting the Jordanian Public Security Directorate (PSD) in expanding its service dog unit. The Federal Police’s support for the Jordanian security authorities in the service dog sector covers sniffer dogs used to detect explosives and other prohibited and dangerous substances. However, the current location of the dog unit is not suitable as a permanent solution to house and train additional sniffer dog handlers and sniffer dogs. There is not enough room to extend the existing facility to meet the requirements, so a completely new infrastructure needs to be built.

Objective

Construction of a new training centre will enable appropriate accommodation and training to be provided for the explosives detection dog unit.

Approach

The project supports the Federal Police in constructing a new facility to house and train the PSD’s explosives detection dog unit. To do so, it is implementing the following measures:

  • The project steers the design, planning and implementation of the new training centre for sniffer dog handlers and sniffer dogs.
  • As part of capacity development, it is enabling all the partner authorities involved to use, service and maintain the new building in the long term.
