Context

Mexico is one of the 10 megadiverse countries in the world. Thanks to its General Law on Climate Change and legislation on biological diversity, the country has a sound legal framework for measures related to climate action and biodiversity. However, there is still room for improvement with regard to the implementation of such measures and corresponding public and private funding.

Since these two subjects are closely linked to Mexico's social agenda and the fight against inequality, the country's climate and biodiversity policies have centred in particular on social aspects. This has made it possible to connect climate action and the preservation of biological diversity with social, economic and ecological benefits. Here, special attention is being paid to involving vulnerable groups like women, the elderly, young people and indigenous peoples.

Objective

The Mexican government implements its climate and biodiversity targets. National, governmental and local stakeholders work together on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Approach

By supporting key decision-makers in their strategies, implementation plans and monitoring efforts, the project is improving Mexico's ability to carry out climate and biodiversity activities.

It is also facilitating the funding of bankable undertakings involving decentralised energy production and ecosystem-based adaptation. In addition, the project is focusing in particular on maximising social, ecological and economic side-effects that result from climate action and biodiversity – the strengthening of communities, the revitalisation of local economies and the protection of ecosystems, for example.

It is complementing these measures with efforts to promote political dialogue and the sharing of skills and knowledge between Mexico and Germany. This knowledge is being managed and systematically applied by the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
