Context

To overcome hunger and food crises and address climate change, food systems need to be transformed and mindsets must change fundamentally. Our current food systems do not produce healthy diets for all people at all times, within our planet’s ecological boundaries. Divergent interests and values, existing political and economic structures, and power imbalances among the actors involved all challenge the much-needed transformation of food systems. Additionally, the potentials of women and young people, who are important actors within food systems, are not leveraged enough. Involving multiple stakeholders is crucial to navigate the complex processes for setting goals and implementing activities to transform our food systems.

Objective

Selected local, national, regional and international initiatives are ready to transform food systems towards healthier and more sustainable diets.

Approach

As part of the Special Initiative Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems (SI AGER) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project supports transformative initiatives working towards healthier and more sustainable food systems. To this end, the project:

  • offers advisory and facilitation services, enabling stakeholders to develop the required competencies and optimise processes in order to implement their strategies for change.
  • creates opportunities for dialogues with the necessary stakeholders to jointly develop visions and identify approaches to bring about the transformation.
  • communicates approaches and solutions to the general public to mobilise the society and the politicians to transform our food systems.
