GIZ’s activities to protect the environment and mitigate climate change are showing results

08.09.2016 – Climate change is one of the most important challenges of our time. Over the past ten years, GIZ projects to protect the environment and mitigate climate change have achieved great success. Millions of people are benefiting from the results.

Hardly any issue is as ubiquitous and important globally as environmental protection and climate change mitigation. The conservation of natural resources is a key prerequisite for sustainable development and the improvement of people’s quality of life.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports its international partners to identify environmental risks, embed protection strategies in policies, and implement appropriate measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change and protect the environment.

For example, GIZ supports activities for protecting forests. About 1.6 billion people live with and are dependent on forests. Forests are also of global importance for the climate, and they harbour more than two-thirds of biodiversity. Against this background, GIZ supports its partners in creating the policy framework for sustainable forest management. This includes gaining the practical know-how and developing viable long-term strategies that will benefit all involved sections of society. The result is a reduction in poverty, more secure food and income, and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Along with forests, renewable energies also play a key role in mitigating climate change. GIZ supports the expansion of renewable energies, such as solar and wind energy, thereby helping supply millions of people with electricity without harming the environment. In addition, it advises governments on the implementation of climate change mitigation projects.

Through its projects, GIZ has made some significant achievements in the past years and brought about sustainable improvements to climate change mitigation and environmental protection.
