DLR and GIZ sign a cooperation agreement

A new basis for working together on international projects

The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have today signed an agreement to enhance cooperation between the two organisations, which will continue and consolidate their work together to date. The agreement serves as a basis for collaborating on international projects in future, especially in the areas of renewable energy, catastrophe prevention and management, early warning systems, climate change mitigation, resource management, transportation systems and metropolitan regions. DLR conducts research on technological innovations that contribute to green developments in Germany, Europe and beyond. GIZ works across the globe to promote sustainable development and strengthen the skills and capacities of its partners. GIZ has well-established contacts with various partners in government, research and industry. By joining their skills and expertise, cooperation between DLR and GIZ provides new opportunities for launching innovative and sustainable solutions on an international scale.

‘We have launched successful projects in cooperation with GIZ, especially in the area of renewable energy. Through our new cooperation agreement, we will now be able to implement larger projects even faster and take advantage of synergies,’ highlights Professor Pascale Ehrenfreund, chairman of the DLR Executive Board. The agreement was signed in Cologne by DLR and GIZ. To mark the signature of the agreement, Vice-Chair of GIZ’s Management Board, Dr Chistoph Beier. explained, ‘We are very happy to be further expanding our cooperation with DLR. Through the application-oriented research conducted by DLR, we will be able to jointly develop new solutions to tackle the current global challenges faced by developing countries and emerging economies.’

Based on the newly signed agreement, DLR, GIZ and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication (MCTIC) will launch a joint research project in the coming weeks. Through an existing energy project on climate-neutral alternative fuels, which GIZ is executing on behalf of the German Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB), the partners will test out the production of environmentally friendly kerosene using renewable energy sources. Their objective is to reduce the climatic impacts of air traffic as much as possible.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federal enterprise with worldwide operations. We support the German Government in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ also engages in international education activities around the globe. Through its work, GIZ assists people and societies in shaping their own future and improving living conditions.
