Context

The ongoing war in Yemen is exacerbating the situation faced by women, young people and civil society stakeholders. These groups currently have a limited ability to exert influence in society, and they are also exposed to multiple forms of violence. At the same time, women, young people and civil society stakeholders are a force for peace in Yemen. To tap into this potential, they need places where they can share their experiences, as well as assistance in better implementing inclusive measures that help reduce conflict.

Objective

Women, young people and civil society stakeholders actively shape peaceful coexistence in their communities.

Approach

The project is carrying out activities all across the country in accordance with the ‘Whole of Yemen’ approach adopted by German cooperation actors. These measures address target groups that face multiple discrimination. The work involved is taking place in three interconnected areas:

  • Promoting women: The project is supporting women in conflict situations and facilitating various forms of communication, helping them to connect with one another and encouraging networking among women’s organisations.
  • Promoting young people: Through innovative approaches and digital methods, the project is raising awareness of peaceful cohesion among the youth of Yemen and improving their media literacy. It is developing fun and educational apps for mobile devices, for example, and encouraging young people to contribute in creative ways.
  • Building the skills of civil society stakeholders: Civil society stakeholders in Yemen are receiving support in building their institutional, technical and methodological skills. This is improving their ability to carry out measures for specific target groups.

In cooperation with DW Akademie, the project is also strengthening the media and information literacy of young Yemeni media professionals, thereby honing their journalistic skills.
