World Wildlife Day: Protecting wildlife for the people in Negros

In Negros Occidental, three local governments are now implementing local subsidy projects in partnership with the Ecosystem-based Adaptation in 2 River Basins (E2RB) Project implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the GIZ Philippines and the Pacific Island Countries, with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection through the International Climate Initiative.

The local government units (LGUs) in the Ilog-Hilabangan River Basin address the biodiversity crisis and climate emergency through the establishment of local conservation areas (LCAs) as part of their climate change adaptation strategy. The LCAs aim to protect and conserve #biodiversity and wildlife, both flora and fauna .

The LGUs engage communities to ensure that they are aware of the benefits, which intact and protected ecosystems provide in reducing flood and landslide risks. Local volunteers are offered training courses on environmental law enforcement and biodiversity monitoring as well as the rehabilitation of degraded forests through planting of native trees along riverbanks and on steep slopes within the water catchment areas.
