Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector (MED-ENEC)

Project description

Title: Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean (MED-ENEC)
Commissioned by: European Commission (MEDA-program)
Country: Ten MEDA-countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey
Lead executing agency: Energy Ministries and Energy Agencies in the 10 partner countries
Overall term: 2006 to 2009

Context

With the sharp increase of prices for primary energy resources, energy efficiency becomes a key for the sustainable development of a country, a community or a company. It is a crucial issue in a global market where productivity and competitiveness are the major performance indicators.

Objective

Energy security is improved; the impact of the strongly increasing energy consumption on environment and climate is mitigated.

Approach

Buildings consume over forty percent of energy worldwide and have a very high saving potential. The project “Energy Efficiency in the Construction Sector in the Mediterranean” (MED-ENEC) supports national MEDA-partners in improving framework conditions for energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in buildings by capacity building, pilot projects and business development measures.

MED-ENEC supports measures for energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in buildings for improving security of energy supply and mitigating the negative impact of the increasing energy consumption on environment and climate.

Results achieved so far

Website. More than 20,000 visitors with over 100,000 page views and 18,000 downloaded documents. Help-desks installed on partner websites in 9 countries. Over 200 companies registered in MED-ENEC business directory database and realised successful searches for partners.

Pilot Projects. 10 low-energy-buildings supported in all partner countries. The buildings save 600 tons of CO2 per year. First dissemination of standards to other buildings or large building programs in Algeria, Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Turkey

Awards. 6 of 10 MED-ENEC Pilot Projects received the prestigious National Energy Globe Award. The MED-ENEC project has received the EuropeAid Communication Award 2008 as the best project of the year in the neighbourhood region.

Information and Training. 2 International Symposia, 15 Regional Workshops, 27 National Consultations, 5 Investors Meetings and 3 Energy Days realised on Fairs served for awareness raising, exchange of good practices and networking.

Communication. Videos, Press Articles, Television and Radio interviews and presentations on numerous events, conferences and workshops.
