BACKGROUNDThe South African - German Energy Programme, Capacities for the Energy Transition (SAGEN-CET) collaborates with South African partners to strengthen public institutions' role in executing a just energy transition. Funded by the German government and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, SAGEN-CET works closely with the Department of Energy and Electricity (DEE), the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), and the South African Local Government Association (SALGA). |
OBJECTIVE
The overall objective of the work of the intern will be to assist in coordinating and implementing gender-responsive activities, support stakeholder engagement, and contribute to communication and knowledge management efforts. Your responsibilities will include organizing events, preparing reports, conducting research, and providing administrative and logistical support.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Intern has the following key tasks and responsibilities:
- Support and collaborate with cross-functional teams in the coordination and implementation of activities focused on gender mainstreaming in the energy sector.
- Support stakeholder coordination to advance gender-responsive policies, strategies, and regulatory frameworks.
- Assist in the conceptualization of new activities related to gender equality and women’s empowerment in the energy sector.
- Support the implementation of communication and knowledge management activities, including the organization of meetings, workshops, events, seminars, training sessions, and other means of information sharing among government institutions, industry stakeholders, and civil society.
- Provide logistical and administrative support, including scheduling meetings, preparing materials, taking minutes, and following up on action points.
- Support general project coordination and management, including reporting, operational planning, and monitoring project activities.
- Contribute to the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) system by providing necessary information and preparing reporting inputs as required.
- Stay informed about gender equality trends, policies, and best practices in the energy sector.
All tasks will be performed under the supervision of the Gender Mainstreaming Technical Advisor and other relevant project team members.

REQUIREMENTS QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, AND EXPERIENCE
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies, Energy Policy, Development Studies, or related fields.
Professional Experience:
- Knowledge of or interest in gender mainstreaming, women’s empowerment, and diversity in the workplace.
- Strong interest in energy policy, renewable energy, and gender equality issues.
- Proven experience or interest in organizing events, workshops, or stakeholder engagements.
- Strong writing, research, and communication skills in English.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-cultural team in a structured and methodical manner.
- Good organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additional Requirements:
- Prospective interns must be South African citizens or in possession of a valid Permanent Residency.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously participated in an internship programme.

- The position will be based at the GIZ Offices in Hatfield, Pretoria.
- The Internship is for a 6-month period, in correspondence with GIZ rules regarding internships.
