Context
Syria’s population suffered for many years as a result of the Syrian regime’s human rights violations and disregard for international law. Foreign powers like Russia and Iran also played a role.
Ever after the fall of the Assad regime, the threat of conflict still persists due to a host of destabilising factors – internal displacement, extremist influences and structural inequality risk polarising segments of the population, which could lead to renewed violence.
Objective
Inclusive conflict resolution, peacebuilding and improved living conditions at local level in selected regions have contributed to stabilising Syria.
Approach
The project supports the German Government’s commitment to a peaceful political transition in Syria and to the prevention of violent extremism. It focuses on supporting local organisations in responding flexibly to the short and medium-term needs of the population and to conflict dynamics. Project activities include meetings, dialogue events, mediation processes and community campaigns. Members of all civil society groups thus participate in decision-making.
The project also contributes to rebuilding Syria’s infrastructure, in order to improve the living conditions of the Syrian population. This eases access to services like water and energy, health care and education.
