GIZ has had a presence in the German capital since 2001 through its Berlin Representation. Here, at the heart of Germany’s political scene, it strengthens dialogue with policy-makers, civil society, the private sector and the academic and research community. Through events, expert discussions and background talks, it contributes development perspectives to debates in the capital.

Originally built in 1913 for a transatlantic cargo insurance company, the GIZ Haus, together with Haus Huth, are the only two historic buildings in the entire Potsdamer Platz area that still stand today. After an eventful and chequered history, the building was acquired by GIZ’s predecessor organisation GTZ in 1999 and restored in line with heritage protection requirements. The Berlin Representation opened its doors to the public in September 2001. Today, the interior and exterior of the building combine traditional and modern architectural elements, in keeping with the architecture of the 21st century.
