Human rights

GIZ advocates human rights. They are the frame of reference for everything we do.

GIZ is aware of its responsibility for human rights – in its project work and at corporate level. We have a wide range of measures in place to respect and promote human rights. These measures are based on the human rights obligations of the Federal Republic of Germany and of our commissioning parties and clients.

Our commitment to human rights goes far beyond key documents, however. We ensure that all GIZ staff have the knowledge, awareness and capacity to act in order to realise human rights in our work. There is a special focus on the protection of children, right from the project planning stage, during which we examine whether human rights might be adversely affected as a result of our projects. We therefore have a strong system in place to minimise any negative impact of our actions, and we monitor existing standards as effectively as possible. At the same time, respect for human rights is extremely important to GIZ as a company – not only with regard to the people with and for whom we work, but also to in-house processes such as procurement. GIZ exercises due diligence as a company.

We investigate rigorously and respond appropriately to concerns that any of our actions might have a negative impact on human rights. GIZ has set up a whistleblower portal for this purpose, on which information can also be submitted anonymously.
