Private sector development

A strong private sector creates jobs and economic prospects. We support companies in achieving sustainable growth – and thus strengthen economies worldwide.

Economic growth is achieved when businesses can thrive. A strong private sector creates jobs, drives innovation and facilitates economic participation for large numbers of people. We support countries in improving framework conditions for companies, strengthening entrepreneurial skills and promoting sustainable business models – with an inclusive, climate-friendly and future-proof approach.

Our skills and expertise

Shaping framework conditions

We advise governments on removing bureaucratic hurdles and setting up reliable economic institutions.

Strengthening entrepreneurial ecosystems

We support chambers of commerce, associations and financial service providers – so that companies receive the support they need.

Providing direct support for SMEs

We advise, train and coach small and medium-sized enterprises in all areas of business operations.

Promoting inclusive business models

We focus on green, digital and socially equitable approaches – to achieve growth for the benefit of many.

Why promoting the private sector is important

In many countries, companies are unable to harness their full potential. There is often a lack of reliable administrative structures, clear property rights and legal certainty. Investment is hampered by overregulation, corruption and insufficient financing opportunities. At the same time, entrepreneurial know-how and sustainable production methods are often lacking.

The focus is on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and, depending on the context, specific target groups such as women, young people, refugees and returnees.

Far-reaching and sustainable growth

Every country has its own challenges – and its own potential. We therefore tailor our support accordingly: we support inclusive business models that integrate vulnerable population groups, promote green companies that contribute to decarbonisation, and support digital start-ups that tap into new markets.

To achieve this, we work closely with other sectors: we promote sustainable financing arrangements, so that SMEs have access to capital, too. Through technical and vocational education and training, we ensure that companies find qualified skilled workers. And through employment promotion, we create links between training and the labour market.
