Green hydrogen market
GIZ is supporting Egypt in developing its hydrogen sector. Germany and Egypt have a long history of cooperation in the sustainable energy sector.
Egypt is regarded as a strategically important market for green hydrogen and aims to position itself as a hub for green energy and renewable resources. The North African country has a rapidly growing population and is the second most industrialised state on the African continent, after South Africa. Egypt has great potential for producing electricity from renewable energy sources, making it an excellent location for developing a green hydrogen sector. For Germany, proximity to locations where this sustainable fuel is produced is a significant advantage, as hydrogen is an important building block in the energy transition.
Achieving climate goals
Germany and Egypt have been working together in the field of sustainable energy for more than 15 years. On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), GIZ is supporting sustainable and affordable energy production and supply. This cooperation contributes to Egypt’s attainment of its national climate goals. At the same time, it is aligned with German political priorities in that it promotes economic transformation to limit long-term global warming.
‘Our support for the Egyptian Government has positive impacts on the private sector and regional partners’
26,000 square kilometres for renewable energy
‘Our support for the Egyptian Government has positive impacts on the private sector and regional partners,’ says Reem Hanna, chief advisor at the Egyptian-German Committee. For example, GIZ has assisted in designating more than 26,000 square kilometres of land for the expansion of renewable energy, an area larger than Rwanda. The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) estimates that around 70 GW of wind power capacity could be installed here. This corresponds to around 10 per cent of Germany’s current capacity and would represent a tenfold increase in Egyptian renewable energy capacity.
As part of its National Hydrogen Strategy, Germany is building on strong international partnerships for the production of sustainable hydrogen and other energy sources.

The latest project evaluation rated the Egyptian-German Committee’s work as highly successful. It notes that effective coordination – both within German international cooperation and with other donors – helped to ensure the efficient use of resources and to maximise results.
